Classes for patients who have been referred to the DHOC
Osteoporosis Bone and Health
Our Osteoporosis Centre offers Osteoporosis Bone and Health classes in a group setting. These classes are instructed by a Registered Nurse (RN), Registered Dietitian (RD), or Pharmacist for patients referred to our clinic. These classes are 2 hours in length, offered multiple times per month, and are intended to provide newly referred patients with:
- An introduction to our clinic
- An overview of what osteoporosis is and how it is diagnosed
- Associated risk factors with osteoporosis
- What you can do to protect your bones
- Medical treatments for osteoporosis
- Nutrition information for managing osteoporosis
The Osteoporosis Bone and Health classes are for educational purposes and medical care will not be provided during the class. You are encouraged to bring a pen and paper to write down any notes, and you will be asked to fill out a short questionnaire at the end of class to provide us with any feedback.
***Please note, this class provides general information about osteoporosis and once you are referred to the DHOC, you will be contacted to help schedule a time for you to attend this class. Some patients referred to us at DHOC have complex metabolic bone problems for whom this class is neither necessary nor appropriate. When the DHOC physician reviews your doctor’s referral, they will decide whether you should be invited to attend this class based upon whether it will be appropriate for your bone health issue.
What if I am unable to attend one of these pre-consultation classes?
If you have been referred to DHOC for an osteoporosis consultation, we strongly recommend that you attend one of these classes if you have been designated to do so. You will be much more prepared and be able to get much more out of your time in the clinic after getting this background information.
However, we recognize that some people are truly unable to attend these classes either due to severe mobility issues or because they live at a great distance from the centre. For these patients, we request that you watch the online version of our Osteoporosis and Bone Health, Bone Hygiene and Medications (updated links coming soon!)
